Marijuana is becoming legalized in more and more states, and it will probably be legalized here in Florida soon enough. The public support for legalizing marijuana is greater than it ever was before, with more than half of states in favor of it. The popularity of this topic leads me to believe there is an opportunity for economic growth and a booming marijuana business. The typical customer would be someone who could reap health benefits from marijuana, or those who simply use it to relax and as a stress-relief, similar to the business of alcohol. Although marijuana legalization across the country can be seen as possible in the future, it will still be a difficult opportunity to exploit. As a drug that has been illegal for so long, a lot of people will still have a negative view on marijuana and see the dangers of it. It will take a while for many people to be accepting of this business and contribute to it. There will also still be many regulations that will make doing business a bit of a challenge. I'm sure i'm not the only one with this opportunity belief- that is why marijuana is slowly but surely becoming legalized in states. My support for the legalization has helped lead me to this belief.
Regulatory Trend 2: Higher starting salary for teachers
Andrew Gillum is proposing a $50,000 minimum starting salary for teachers in Florida if he wins governor. A conversation with a friend who is just starting out a career in education led me to stumble upon this idea. I believe that when given a higher salary, an opportunity exists for teachers to live more comfortable and enjoyable lives. Many people may not enter a career in education, even if it is something they are passionate about, just because they know that the salary isn't very high. Will this salary increase, there may be more passionate and qualified teachers, and these people will not have to stress about paying the pills. This opportunity exists for any teacher in Florida. This opportunity seems a bit difficult to exploit because with the salary increase, the competition for these jobs will increase and funds may have to decrease from other places in order to pay teachers this higher salary. The reason I have this belief for opportunity is because I have always felt that teachers don't get paid enough. I would love to see an opportunity for teachers to be better compensated for all of the work that they put in.
Economic Trend 1: Baby boomers aren't retiring
Many baby boomers are deciding not to retire; some for the reason that they need the money and others simply because they want to keep working. This could have something to do with the lessons they learned during the Great Recession, and therefore the worries they have regarding money. What this means is that this older generations are keeping jobs away from the younger generations. This opens up an opportunity for the younger generation to get creative with their skills and knowledge and create new jobs in order for them to be employed. With the consistent increase in technology and the changes in the way we do things, opportunities are always opening up for new jobs to be created. This opportunity exists for any one starting out in the work-force looking for an opportunity for employment. This opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit because it can sometimes be difficult to create new jobs that require actual people and not just some robotic form or technology piece. I thought about this opportunity because, as i'm getting closer to my post-grad life and therefore closer to finding a job, I sometimes get worried that there isn't going to be a job out there for me. Creating new jobs might be necessary in order for everyone that wants to work to be able to work.
Economic Trend 2: Global climate change is causing more natural disasters
With global climate change, an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases will increase global temperature, creating an environment that allows more intense storms and natural disasters to occur. I belief an opportunity exists in regards to the destruction that these disasters cause. There is an opportunity for more rescue teams and support post-disaster. Funding that can help families whose house and resources have just been destroyed by the storm will simultaneously help these people get back up on their feet. Organizations can be created that help out entire communities that have been affected by the natural disaster. I think this opportunity exists for anyone living in an area where natural disasters from the result of global climate change occur. This opportunity will be relatively difficult to exploit; the funding for these organizations is what makes this a challenge. This belief came to mind after hearing about hurricane Florence that is currently slamming North and South Carolina.
Hey Julia, i really like the articles you picked because they are very common in today's society. The issue about teachers not getting paid enough is very important because i believe a lot of teachers deserved to be paid more than what they originally get paid while some don't. I also agree about the disasters caused by global climate changes such as hurricanes. It is important to be mindful and prepare our self for those type of conditions.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job of picking really interesting and different economic trends and regulatory changes. I personally found the article about teacher’s salaries very interesting. I think you gave an amazing analysis of the details of opportunity. I agree that teachers do not get paid enough. My sister-in-law’s parents are both teachers, and they have yet to be able to retire in their 60s because they do not think they have enough money to.
